The Dishonest Son and The ‘Ghost’ Doctor Mother – Chapter 56

To have a message for Yu Qingluo

Nannan pursed his lips and his eyes narrowed as he approached Ye Xiudu’s ear and started whispering several words. After some time, he finished his words then sat back in place, proudly lifting his chin with a triumphant expression on his face.

Ye Xiudu was astonished: “Ge momo[1]?”

“Yeah, my grandma Ge is a very good person. She is very kind and beautiful and for many years she has been taking care of both me and my mother. But since half a year ago she has been missing, me and my mother have been searching for her for a long time. We came to Jiang Cheng because we found some clues about her showing up in here.”

When speaking about Ge Momo the kid’s expression became extremely gloomy.

It could be seen that the relationship between him and Ge Momo was very good, otherwise, he wouldn’t have shown this expression.

“Hah, but we have been searching for her in Jiang Cheng for so long and, even with aunty Jin and her crew’s help, we weren’t able to find her. Aunty Jin said she was sure that Ge Momo wasn’t in Jiang Cheng anymore, because she would have shown up after hearing news about the Ghost Doctor being in the city. I also rode the panther around the street many times but even that didn’t make her show up too, so I think she must not be in here anymore.”

Ye Xiudu quickly understood. So the behaviour he displayed that day on the streets was in order to find someone?

Nannan was laying in his arms, feeling relieved as he heard the sound of Ye Xiudu’s heartbeat. This kind of peaceful feeling wasn’t the same he got when he was with his mother. It almost seemed… seemed like… oh, right. It seemed to be a much bigger sense of peacefulness.

Could it be, that this was the feeling of a father?

Nannan blinked dazedly, then continued speaking: “Actually, my mother also suspects that Grandma Ge is no longer in Jiang Cheng. But there was no further news about her anywhere else. I think that Grandma Ge might be in the Imperial Capital. She has lived there for many years and is very familiar with that place, therefore I planned on joining your return to the imperial capital. Then maybe we would be able to find her.”

Ye Xiudu lowered his head in surprise, looking at his serious expression and after some time he answered: “I see. Since it’s like that, then we should move now.” “Now?” Nannan looked up in a hurry, asking Ye Xiudu in astonishment.

“It’s better to be early than late [2]” He originally planned on leaving for the Capital today but he hadn’t thought of a way to convince Yu Qingluo. Since Nannan had taken the initiative to give him this plan, then how could he miss the chance?”

Nannan frowned, his lips twisted in a pout as he was seeming somewhat unwilling.

If they start their journey right now, wouldn’t it be too hurried? He still hadn’t eaten all the delicious food he wanted to eat, drank all the delicious drinks he wanted to drink nor enjoyed all the fun he could enjoy from the entertainment around. If they just depart like that, he would be 100% unsatisfied.

“On this trip, the panther will let you ride it.” Ye Xiudu stared at his funny bun-like face full of wrinkles and happily threw him a bait.

Nannan immediately became spirited, raising his head, he said in a very solemn and righteous manner: “Uncle Ye, you are correct. It’s better if we don’t delay another second, even though we aren’t sure whether Grandma Ge is already in the Capital waiting for me. I love her so much and certainly can’t let her wait for too long. Let us go, but first, let’s find Uncle Da Wu.”

Ye Xiudu laughed in spite, it was really… thoughtful of him.

Holding his small body, Ye Xiudu stood up, positioned himself and jumped from the roof towards the ground, going straight towards the Fulong tavern’s kitchens.

It was soon lunchtime, and the kitchen was already in full swing. Especially after the Ghost Doctor offering medical consultations yesterday, it was a sure thing that the tavern would be receiving as many guests as there were clouds in the sky in these next days, bustling with extraordinary liveliness and excitement.

The Ghost Doctor was like a living advertisement with a long-term effect.

Nannan shrunk his head in his neck and carefully examined the insides of the kitchen, sneaking towards and climbing over the stove where he saw two large chicken legs placed over it. Without saying a word, he extended his hands, grabbed and stuffed them into an oily paper bag he carried with him.

Da Wu’s lips twitched as he watched the little guy acting as a thief so openly in broad daylight. Silently, he took a step forward.

“Nannan, everybody is looking at you.” Because of his intrusion, everybody had already halted their movements to watch the little guy’s movements with a covert smile.

Nannan turned his head and angrily said: “Why is everybody looking at what I’m doing? Can’t you just pretend I’m invisible or something?”

“Nannan, you can just tell Uncle Da Wu what you want to eat and I’ll give it to you.”

“That is not the same.” Nannan spoke full of conviction, proceeding to sweep the hibiscus cake into the oily bag. “Oh, by the way. I am here to find you, Uncle Da Wu. Come with me, quickly, I have something to say to you.”

Da Wu gave the little guy a puzzled look. Then turned his head to first excuse himself with the other guys in the kitchen before hugging Nannan to leave the kitchen.

“Wait a second, that apple. Give me two of them.” Nannan lifted both hands to sweep more delicious food into his little bag again.

Da Wu felt something was strange. What was this little guy going to do by taking so many things? If he wanted to eat something, then wouldn’t it be easier for them to just bring it to him? Did he need to… pack them up?

However, Da Wu didn’t think too much about that before he felt a tingling pain in his neck before getting dragged inside a room by someone.

“It’s you” Da Wu hurriedly hugged Nannan tighter in his bosom, frowning he raised his head to see who it was. Noticing it was Ye Xiudu, he was immediately startled: “What do you want?” Wasn’t this guy a friend of Yu Qingluo? According to the shopkeeper’s words, he and Miss Yu had an even closer relationship than friends (TL: more ambiguous).

Nannan struggled out from Da Wu’s arms and hurriedly slipped down. Seeing that there were many melon seeds and sorted nuts inside of the room, he went ahead to pack them too.

Ye Xiudu was already frowning, and with an already tired tone he said: “Nannan, whatever it is that you want to eat, we can also purchase on the way to the Capital.”

To bring this much, doesn’t he feel like it’s too heavy to carry?

“Uncle Ye, let me be. You first discuss things over with Uncle Da Wu, I’ll soon finish packing everything up.” Nannan didn’t turn his head as he kept on grabbing handfuls of the assorted nuts and packing them.

Ye Xiudu let out a light cough, then turned around to face Da Wu who had a puzzled face, Ye Xiudu’s expression flashed with embarrassment before turning back to normal.

Actually, he hadn’t planned on using the strategy of intimidating Da Wu to help them carry the news, but Nannan… insisted that this way would be more exciting.

Whatever… he’ll just indulge him this once.

But he still relaxed his grasp and with a calm expression said: “Da Wu, go on and bring Miss Yu a message.”

Da Wu almost couldn’t hold his expression. Doing all of this just for him to bring her a message? Just letting Nannan talk to him directly was enough, but to do this in such a secretive way… wait a minute! If Nannan couldn’t just go and talk personally to Miss Yu, then this was proof that the message they wanted him to give wasn’t something simple.

Were they going to leave?

Nannan had already finished packing everything up and went to sit on the table, giggling to Da Wu: “Uncle Da Wu, I know that you love Nannan the most. So, I’ll have to trouble you with this.”

Saying that he nodded towards Ye Xiudu, who pursed his lips and passed some words to Da Wu.

Da Wu’s pupils dilated in shock, he then started shaking his head from side to side vigorously. But that pair of large, pitiful eyes Nannan put up made him relent. (TL: famous puppy face)

After a long period of hesitation, he ended up stiffly nodding his head.

Translator’s Notes

[1] 嬷嬷 (momo) – it’s the term for a wet nurse. Idk if I’ll be explaining it perfectly, however from all times I have met this term, a wet nurse is an older woman (normally married or a widow) that accompanies a woman or her children, they are normally breastfed by her when young (since rich people don’t breastfeed their children) and they normally accompany them through life. They can also act as teachers sometimes (not the traditional teachers), teaching some practical skills, for example, etiquette. Another thing, their ages can vary from old to a woman in their 20’s as well, you have to remember that women marry and have children early in ancient times. I’ll use the pinyin for this word when it shows up, so be advised!

[2] 夜长梦多 – Lit. The night is long and the dreams many – It means something like “To delay/drag/to lengthen the period of time can end up turning a situation for the worst. I translated it as ‘It’s better to be early than late’, trying to keep the meaning of the phrase.
