The Dishonest Son and The ‘Ghost’ Doctor Mother – Chapter 75

Hello folks! Please, pardon our lateness (again). We ran into some problems (bugs) with Wordspress’s post system and had to contact their support for a fix. As you can imagine, that took a while but everything should be fine now.

Yu Zuolin’s Concubine

Outside the sun was shining brightly in the sky. After following Ye Xiudu to pick a courtyard of his own, Nannan resisted the urge to go out to play and just quietly waited for his mother to come back.

He wanted to give her half of the silver he got as soon as possible, after all his mother had been searching for him yesterday.

If he didn’t take the initiative to hand over the silver in advance, then the consequences of his mother’s wrath might be such that all his money might be gobbled up by her.

Therefore, even if uncle Shen, uncle Mo, uncle Wen, uncle Peng, as well as his newly acknowledged father said that they would take him outside to shop, he still kept his dutiful guard over his money. What a joke, these people trying to trick me into going out… isn’t it all because they are eyeing my money?

He, Yu Qingnan, is extremely clever and will not be fooled.

But… where in the world has his mother gone to? It was already afternoon and the sun was about to set but there was still no signs of her.

“Cough.” Yu Qingluo choked on her own saliva inexplicably, frowning she brought a cup up to take a sip of water.

Jin Liuli, next to her, glanced at her puzzledly: “What’s the matter with you?”

Yu Qingluo shook her head and shoot a glance at the pharmacy[1] downstairs, opposite to the building they were staying in.

After a while, she ‘humphed’: “He is really busy enough.”

“I heard that Doctor Jiang’s skills are top-notch. Many of the wealthy families in the imperial capital pay a high price to have an appointment with him. So it is not weird that he isn’t inside of the pharmacy at the moment.” Jin Liuli poured herself a glass of water and glanced outside of the window again. Looking up at the sky she continued: “However, we have waited for the whole day already and, if we keep on like this, I won’t be able to bear any longer.”

Yu Qingluo stood up and stretched her waist gracefully, looking a bit sleepy: “That’s ok if you can’t wait. Isn’t it fine to just find a reason to invite him to our residence with an appointment to see a Doctor?”

Jin Liuli laughed at her: “Are you really treating Ye Xiudu’s residence as your own home? You even want to request a doctor’s visit without asking first. Don’t you know that Doctor Jiang’s identity isn’t that petty? You have to make an appointment with him first if you want him to visit your residence, and that’s only if you are a government official or a person of high stature.”

“Do you think that Ye Xiudu’s identity is not compelling enough? That he is unable to invite a person? My estimative is that, even if it is a doctor in the imperial palace, he’d probably be able to invite him into the residence.” Yu Qingluo had pondered about it and a person with Ye Xiudu’s temperament is not one that could have been raised by ordinary folk.

In addition, there are so many extraordinary people around him and even so many assassins trying to kill him.

If he was just a common young master then why would it be necessary for so many groups to go after his life?

Jin Liuli couldn’t stop herself from sighing, although she also dared not give birth to such a guess in her mind, she also didn’t dare speak it out loud.

“Hey, he’s back.” Jin Liuli put the cup in her hand down and pointed at a thin person carrying his medicine box into the building opposite to theirs.

Yu Qingluo’s brows rose slightly, giving him a glance she proceeded to get up: “Let’s go, go and meet this Doctor[2] Jiang.” As she spoke her mouth curved up in a very cunning and sinister manner.

Jin Liuli couldn’t help but tremble all over, hurriedly putting down a small piece of silver on the table (TL: She’s paying for the tea) and getting up to follow her.

Although the sun was setting at this moment, the Pharmacy in front of them was still filled with people.

As the largest pharmacy in the capital, Xinsheng Pharmacy always had patients who came to seek medical treatment knocking on their doors. And adding to that, the doctor in charge of the establishment was a disciple of the former head of the imperial hospital and his name alone was already enough advertisement for the public.

The two women arrived in front of the doors of the pharmacy, where a faint smell of medicines assailed their noses.

Yu Qingluo was long used to this smell, but Jin Liuli found it a bit unbearable. She pinched her nose and said in an uncomfortable tone: “Let’s just go in to find him, don’t stand around in here.”

Yu Qingluo nodded and walked into Xinsheng Pharmacy.

As soon as they entered the building, a medicine child received them [3]. Perhaps because he noticed that they weren’t dressed as ordinary people would, he waved away other people and invited them into a private space.

“The two young misses, here’s a clean space. You can stay in here as I’ll go and call Doctor Liu immediately.”

“Wait a moment.” Yu Qingluo raised a hand and smiled: “We are looking for Doctor Jiang.”

Doctor Jiang?

The medicine child’s movements froze for a moment but then he stood up to say in an embarrassed manner: “Doctor Jiang has just returned from an appointment and is a little tired, so he has gone to rest. Doctor Liu’s medical skills are also very outstanding and it wouldn’t make a difference if he came instead.

Yu Qingluo shook her head and gave a glance to Jin Liuli, who after receiving this glance, went on taking a heavy-looking silver piece from her sleeves.

“I want doctor Jiang.”

This much silver…

The medicine child’s eyes shone brightly and he understood that the other party might be a young lady from a wealthy family, so he couldn’t afford to offend them and, so to speak, this amount of money was such that even Doctor Jiang might not necessarily be able to receive it during his appointments.

After a moment of hesitation, he hurriedly smiled: “Young ladies, please bear for a moment. I’ll go and be back in a moment.”

Yu Qingluo was satisfied, asking Jin Liuli to put away the silver as they waited for doctor Jiang.

The medicine child left in a hurry, and not long after, he ran back in a hurry, looking anxious as if he was afraid they’d both run away.

“The master has asked the two ladies to enter the inner room so you can talk further.”

Yu Qingluo and Jin Liuli gave each other a glance and tacitly stood up, following the medicine boy into the inner rooms.

He was dressed differently from what he had on previously when they saw his back from the restaurant windows. After doctor Jiang came back he had obviously changed his clothes.

That was good. She was a doctor herself and, after a day of appointments, she would naturally also want to change into some fresh clothes.

Doctor Jiang was a seasoned person and, although the medicine child’s description was a bit exaggerated, knowing that the other party was a lady of a wealthy background, he wasn’t as rash as he would. Seeing them coming in, he stood up slightly and pointed to the chair in front of him, saying: “The lady who isn’t feeling well, sit in here please.”

Yu Qingluo gracefully sat in front of him and stretched a hand out: “Doctor, take a look at what’s wrong with me.”

Doctor Jiang was stunned for a second, had had never seen a young miss that would look directly in a man’s eyes like she was doing, even if this man was a doctor.

After a short pause, he carefully went to take her pulse. However, the longer he did so, the more his brows twisted. He didn’t make say a word for a long time.

Yu Qingluo wasn’t in a hurry and she knew that there was nothing wrong with herself.

At that time, the medicine child standing by the side, who was still a bit immature, was afraid that doctor Jiang wouldn’t be able to see what was wrong and the silver might slip out from their hands. So he immediately asked: “Master, why don’t you speak.”

Doctor Jiang raised his eyes to give him a pointed glare and said in an angry tone: “What one must avoid at all costs when diagnosing a patient is impetuousness. Just how did I teach you? Get out.”

That medicine child was somewhat dumbfounded, but frightened by the pointed eyes of his master, he finally answered ‘Yes.’ and went out of the room angrily.

Jin Liuli waited until he had finally stepped out of the room and got up to guard the doors.

Yu Qingluo chuckled ever so softly and asked in a lazy tone: “Doctor Jiang, I heard that the concubine of General Yu’s household has been treated by you?”

Doctor Jiang was shocked and immediately took his hand, which had been used to take her pulse, back, finding that the tip of his fingers had turned dark.

Translator’s Notes

[1] I chose ‘pharmacy’ instead of a drugstore of sorts. For it not to be confused with our modern pharmacies. These stores specialize in selling herbs and other products used in TCM and sometimes also had doctors working inside.

[2] 大夫 (daifu) – the way to call a doctor in ancient times. Nowadays we use 医生 instead, but you can still find this word if you use books published in the ’90s to study Chinese 😀

[3] Medicine child (药童) – is a child that follows a medical practitioner and they may or may not become their apprentices in the future. But they learn about the herbs, how to differentiate them and such and they are mostly doctor assistants.
